GOne with the Wind ON-Arctic (GOWON-Arctic)
Addressing the need for new measurement capabilities for the new Arctic regime, we propose a game-changing in-situ Arctic-wide Distributed Mobile Monitoring system called GOne with the Wind ON-Arctic (GOWON ). GOWON-Arctic consists of a large number of wind-propelled self-powered rugged inflatable spheres referred to as Moballs, equipped with an array of low-power low-mass sensors and micro devices able to measure a wide range of environmental factors such as the ice conditions (ice class, ice thickness, ice temperature, snow depth, etc.), chemical species (carbon dioxide, bromine monoxide, ozone, gaseous elementary mercury, etc.), wind vector patterns, cloud coverage, air temperature and pressure, electromagnetic fields, surface and subsurface water conditions, short- and long-wave radiations, bathymetry, and anthropogenic factors such as pollutions. This system has the power to observe these constantly changing conditions in near real-time, providing the basic capability required for updating in a timely manner the ice conditions and the weather patterns necessary to improve prediction models in a non-stationary climate change.
